Chapter Fifteen
Roger needed to call Dade and explain what heâd learned after Dade left the day before, but the sheriff had told him to go to Helper and speak with Cutler Pikeâs widow, for he was now certain Pike was the dead man theyâd found near the mine. Maybe Roger could learn more about Cutler and see if his wife could give him any clues as to why someone, specifically Gus Colburn, would want to kill her husband.
He had learned Gusâs identity after speaking with him at the hospital early that morning. And Roger recalled the earlier disagreement Gus and Pike had been involved in at Hanna that had caused a deputy to go up there only to find them gone. Gus was under watch at the hospital since he was a suspect in the murders of both Cutler Pike and Bridgette Tansey.
Since Roger had had only a couple hours of sleep, Deputy Alec Harris had been assigned to drive him to Helper so Roger could get some rest on the way.
Roger was anxious to get back to his office and look at the video that was downloaded on Dadeâs computer. He hoped it would confirm that Gus had killed Cutler. He had yet to learn how exactly Cutler had died, although the hole in his chest suggested heâd been shot with a gun. Ballistics would be able to confirm if it was the same gun Gus had fired at him and Dade. Heâd looked the body over fairly closely after it was finally removed from its grave, hoping to find the bullet. But finding it would require another trip to Dadeâs mine since the bullet had gone straight through the body. The video might help him know exactly where to look, but even then, the likelihood of finding it was slim.
âWeâre in Helper, detective,â Deputy Harris said an hour or so after Roger finally drifted to sleep.
Roger woke up. âSorry. I guess Iâm pretty tired.â
âThatâs why the sheriff had me drive you,â the deputy reminded him. âSo how are you going to handle this?â
âFirst, we need to get a local officer to accompany us. Weâll meet him and then go on out to Pikeâs place,â Roger said.
He made a call, and it was only ten minutes before an officer arrived. Roger explained the murder of Cutler Pike and why he wanted to inform the widow, hoping to learn something from her that would help build his case against Gus Colburn.
Belinda Pike was a short woman and quite overweight. She answered the door when Roger knocked some time later. âWhat now? Is Cutler in some kind of trouble? I wish heâd quit wasting all his free time looking for foolâs gold. And thatâs all it is. Itâs only fools that go looking for that stuff. Well, come on in. Itâs getting hot out there.â
The local officer followed Roger and Alec into the house. Roger wrinkled his nose. âI burned the toast,â Mrs. Pike said sheepishly. âI had the toaster turned up too high.
